  • Why choose a Registered Marriage and Family Therapist? Registered Marriage and Family Therapists (RMFTs) have graduate training (a Master’s or Doctoral degree) in marriage and family therapy and have met rigorous standards, among the highest in Ontario. They are relationship specialists who help individuals, couples, and families resolve personal and work-related problems while considering each individual’s unique family, cultural, and social context. As well, RMFT’s are held to the demanding Code of Ethics of The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and are Clinical Fellows of the AAMFT.

  • What is the initial process to get the ball rolling? When you contact me, I would need to know your reasons for wanting to get counselling and whether I could help you with your goal. If we agree to work together, I would send documents by email for you to fill out and send back to me before your first session (e.g. counselling agreement, personal information form, limits to confidentiality form).

  • What does the first session look like and how long does it last?I would listen to the situation that brought you to counselling as well as your hopes for change. We could then collaborate to refine your goal and tentatively agree on the therapeutic direction we would take. One session generally lasts 60 minutes.

  • How many sessions would I need? You decide how many sessions you want. Ideally, the number of sessions would depend on the nature of your issue and your goal. We would monitor your progress along the way and modify your goal as needed. When you feel you have accomplished your counselling goal, you can determine whether you want to continue with another goal or terminate counselling. Conversely, we could also tailor the therapeutic plan to make as much progress as we can in a predetermined number of sessions.
